Do I need a makeup artist for headshots?

You don’t need one, but most clients book one. Professional hair and makeup keeps skin even under studio light, controls shine, and keeps the focus on your eyes and expression – which is what casting directors and hiring managers actually read.

Headshots LA does not provide hair and makeup in-house. You are welcome to bring your own artist, or contact one of the independent professionals listed below. These artists are referrals, not Headshots LA employees– availability, services, rates, payment, and scheduling are arranged directly with the artist.

How It Works

Booking your artist

Hair and makeup is arranged separately from your session. Three steps, in order.

  1. Lock your shoot date

    Book your headshot session first, so you have a confirmed date and call time to give the artist.

  2. Contact the artist directly

    Reach out to whoever you like from the list above. Confirm availability, services, rates, and payment with them – not through the studio.

  3. Send references ahead

    Send a recent photo of yourself plus hair and makeup references, so they arrive knowing the look you want. Then prepare for your shoot.

Doing It Yourself

Headshot hair & makeup tips

Doing your own hair and makeup for your session? Keep everything natural. The makeup should never compete with your eyes and expression.

Hair

Keep it very natural, in soft tones that complement your skin. Above all it should not distract from your eyes and expression.

Foundation

As natural-looking as possible, but with enough coverage to even out skin. Most people need medium to full coverage; very clear skin may only need concealer.

Lips

Use a lipstick close to your natural color – it should even out your lips, not change them. Keep lips matte. No gloss.

Eyes

Give eyes the most attention. Enough shadow and liner in natural tones to make them pop, and nothing more.
